Sylvia Smith, a two-time breast cancer survivor from Colorado Springs, Colorado, has made it her mission to spread awareness about this devastating disease. She recently participated in the Bowl for the Cure Week at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, an event that brought together survivors like herself to compete and raise funds for breast cancer research.

Smith's journey with breast cancer began when she was just 34 years old. A biopsy confirmed her worst fears, but she refused to let the diagnosis define her. Instead, she chose to fight back with courage and determination.

'I was starting my career as a schoolteacher at the time,' Smith recalled. 'It was a challenging period in my life, but I never gave up hope.'

Fast forward to 2023, Smith has made it her 14th consecutive appearance at the USBC Women's Championships. This year's event, held from June 19-25 at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas, featured activities such as the Approach of Hope, a raffle, and daily giveaways. All funds raised during the week went to support Bowl for the Cure, a program sponsored by USBC in partnership with Susan G. Komen.

The event was more than just a competition – it was an opportunity for survivors like Smith to share their stories and connect with others who have gone through similar experiences. The Bowling Plaza was transformed into a hub of activity, with activation spots set up to increase breast cancer awareness, honor survivors, and drive donations for the cause.

For Smith, participating in Bowl for the Cure Week was a way to give back to the community that has supported her throughout her journey. 'The bowling community has been incredibly supportive,' she said. 'It's amazing to see so many people come together to make a difference.'
